What is the Difference Between Inservice and Independent Study?

We are constantly trying to clarify definitions in CasaManager so that our users apply the same meaning within agencies and externally across our broad network of users.

I have been getting quite a few questions about the difference between the Inservice and Independent Study tabs in CasaManager. This article describes the difference between the two so that our users are clear. Inservice hours and Independent Study hours all get attached to the volunteer and staff records for credit, but they are captured differently. There is also clear guidance on this in the integrated help guide.

INSERVICE:

An inservice is any continuing education or enrichment/refresher training that your agency establishes and hosts. Your agency creates the training, creates and provides the training material, sends notices out to the volunteers, collects the RSVPs and regrets, provides a training description or agenda and sign-in sheet (all of which can be done in CasaManager), and agency staff facilitates the training.

INDEPENDENT STUDY:

An independent study is any continuing education, enrichment/refresher training that is established and facilitated by an agency not your own. An outside agency (or the judge) creates the training, creates and provides the training materials, sends notices to the community of child welfare parties, collects the RSVPS and regrets, provides a training description, creates the sign-in sheet, and location and time. Oftentimes, we, the staff, are not aware that the volunteers have attended until we see their hours.

Examples:

Brown Bag Lunch Sessions Planned and Hosted by a Judge, Office of Guardian ad Litem, or others
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Planned and Hosted by Local Mental Health or Pediatric Unit
Wraparound Process Planned and Hosted by the Department (of Human Services)

REPORTS:

When you run reports for attendance, categories, and compliance, CasaManager breaks out Inservice hours and Independent Study hours.
